The Gate is committed to minimising the negative impact of its operational activities on the environment. This policy statement sets out the following actions we take to achieve this:

  • Meet the environmental legislation that relates to the operation of the hotel and our activities, and where possible identify opportunities to adopt best practice over and above the minimum legislative and industry requirements.

  • Reduce the use of energy and water in all our operational activities. This is designe to edge The Gate closer to becoming a carbon neutral company.

  • We regularly consider impact to the environment in our daily decision-making management meetings and with our Green Committee Meetings with the goal in becoming a more sustainable hotel.

  • We manage all waste generated via an effective recycling program, working with a waste collection partner. Ensure specialised waste including electrical and hazardous are disposed of correctly following The Environmental Protection Act 1990, The Controlled Waste Regulations 1991, The Special Waste Regulations 1996 (as amended). Our target is ‘zero waste to landfill’.

  • We take a sustainable hotel approach to running our events.

  • We are in the process of partnering with industry leading organisations which promote sustainability such as ‘dripdrop’, ‘faundit’, ‘too-good-to-go’. From 2023, we will make it mandatory to take the environmental credentials of our suppliers when procuring new products. By doing so we wish to encourage other organisations to integrate sustainability into their own operations.

  • Promote sustainability to our guests for green tourism via ongoing initiatives including once in three-day linen change policy, plant-a-seed program, bathroom shower on time sensitive water cut-off, and pursue Green Key accreditation.

  • Encouraging our guests to explore the local attractions by public transport, bicycle or on foot by providing information on walks, cycle routes and cycle hire information and bus and tube timetables at Reception. We provide walking maps to local attractions at reception to further reduce overall carbon emissions.

  • Continue to work with local businesses and organisations including Aldgate BID

  • Continue to take part in Earth Hour and corporate sustainability events.

  • We have a 4-star EXCELLENT rating awarded by BREEAM, the world’s leading sustainability assessment. BREEAM rated developments are more sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the people who live and work in them and help protect natural resources.

  • All the windows are double-glazed.

  • Measure our progress through action planning and review this environmental policy regularly to ensure continual improvement.
